Hopes are always high at the start of a new theater season. Only when reality hits the stage does the disappointment set in. But this season has plenty of cause for optimism: a surfeit of stars (Katie Holmes, Al Pacino, Debra Winger), oddities (a musical about evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, written by Kathie Lee Gifford) and crowd-pleasing revivals (read on).
