In 1984, Disney let a young animator named Tim Burton make a 28-minute live-action comedy about a boy who reanimates his dead pit bull terrier but judged it too creepy for kids. Twenty-eight years later, Disney has bankrolled Burton’s stop-motion-animated feature version of Frankenweenie. Smart and heart-strong, it pays glorious black-and-white tribute to the James Whale Frankenstein films of the 1930s and to any child’s eternal love for his pet.
