”Bad Blood”
Season 5, Episode 12
Original Airdate: February 22, 1998
The X-Files meets Rashomon: “Bad Blood” takes the classic “he said, she said” concept and soaks the writing in irony, wit, and sarcasm. The episode revolves around the two agents’ respective accounts following a bizarre string of vampire-related attacks in Dallas.
What makes the hokey, self-aware humor succeed is Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan’s attention to character. We see new layers of Mulder’s self-obsessed hedonism and Scully’s antagonistic common sense, as both are put in a series of unlikely situations. Laughs come from Luke Wilson’s charming-then-goofy police officer, the chubby ginger kid from The Sandlot, and Mulder’s spoken word rendition of Isaac Hayes’ Shaft. Yes, that actually happens.
