“Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose”
Season 3, Episode 4
Original Airdate: October 13, 1995
Not all the show’s best writing belonged to Gilligan. Darin Morgan set the watermark for all standalone episodes with “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose”. (Of course, much credit goes to the late Peter Boyle as the episode’s titular psychic mastermind.)
With this third-season gem, Morgan successfully fused science fiction, comedy, thriller, and horror into something wholly original and unique — just what fans wanted in their non-mythology episodes. Similar to Rod Serling’s genre-defining work on The Twilight Zone, Morgan pens a story that leaves us satisfied and thinking with a brand of singularity to be titled and remembered as “The One With the Sarcastic Psychic.” Both Boyle and Morgan ran away with Emmys for this particular episode — and there’s no confusion why.
