Season 2, Episode 8
Original Airdate: November 11, 1994
Talk about irony: The series’ best episode about Dana Scully is the one she’s hardly in it at all. At the time of filming, Gillian Anderson had just delivered her child, which works to the story’s advantage, as she spends most of her time comatose on a hospital bed.
So what does this say about Scully? It demonstrates just how essential she is to the show’s characters and threads, specifically Mulder. Their relationship acts as the show’s rigid backbone, and “One Breath” was its captivating radiograph. Watching Mulder’s desperate, controversial attempts to save her life at any cost would be a storyline revisited in the future (including the 1998 movie Fight the Future), and it’s here we learn how emotionally attached to Scully we’d become, too. If you’re not screaming at Mulder to keep going, just stop watching altogether.
