Eugene Tooms from “Squeeze” and “Tooms”
Season 1, Episodes 3 and 21
Original Airdates: September 24, 1993 and April 22, 1994
If the Flukeman taught us never to swim in sewers, Eugene Tooms left us staring at our air vents and holding our waists in agony. Doug Hutchinson’s wild-eyed slug of a creature crawled into the nightmares of everyone that decided to give their Friday nights to The X-Files.
As the first monster-of-the-week episode, “Squeeze” represents the series’ first real watercooler episode, tagging the then young franchise with buzzy words like “gross”, “terrifying”, “icky”, and “foul.” Even by today’s standards — in an era of decomposing zombies and leather-clad demons — Tooms’ trails of bile-covered newspapers and malleable limbs makes the stomach churn in unnatural, acidic ways. So popular was the character that producers brought him back for an encore before the end of season one.
