DIIV is the project of Zachary Cole Smith, who earned his indie rock merit badge playing in Beach Fossils. DIIV fully embraces the shoegaze ethos of the Fossils, but with Smith at the helm, the results are warmer and more personal—imbued with an almost homemade aesthetic. The songs on their dreamy debut album Oshin are filled with fluttering synths, splashy drums, glittering guitars and charmingly inscrutable lyrics that make it all too easy to project your own meaning on to the melodies. Live, the band has the ability to create a dream-like and sonorous atmosphere, which can be transporting for the audience. And that might be just what you need on a warm Southern California afternoon.
See them live: 2:30 PM Sunday, April 14, Mojave
