A strange but throughly watchable horror-mystery-thriller, What Lies Beneath gets the real-world elements right, even if the supernatural components never quite come together. (Nerd trivia: The film—directed by Robert Zemeckis—was co-written by Clark Gregg, the actor who played S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson in The Avengers.
Here, Dr. Norman Spencer (Harrison Ford), after having made a startling admission to his wife Claire (Michelle Pfeiffer), sedates her and places her immobilized body in a slowly filling bathtub. Norman confesses to some pretty bad things but ends up falling on the floor and knocking himself out in one of the movie’s several horror-film twists. The real tension comes when Claire, straining to get some control of her temporarily paralyzed limbs, tries to pull out the drain plug as the water level creeps ever closer to her nose.
