BEST EXPLANATION: Whatever it is, gives off a nice orange glow—so it’s probably not an old newspaper and half a ham-and-cheese sandwich. One version of the script, says co-writer Roger Avary, had the briefcase filled with diamonds, an idea soon rejected for being “too boring and predictable.”

One idea that found wide popularity on the Internet suggested that the briefcase contained Marcellus Wallace’s…soul. And further postulated that the kids killed by Jules and Vincent were “the devil’s helpers.” (We need to re-watch this movie very soon,)

Director Quentin Tarantino maintains that such debate is entirely irrelevant, as the briefcase is a MacGuffin—arguably the greatest in recent memory.
