Has Clint Eastwood ever played the President in a movie? Because he would be a bad-ass President. What first appears to be a political ad (that voice is so familiar … who is that? … oh wait, it’s Clint Eastwood) turns out to be this year’s most intense Super Bowl commercial, a two-minute tribute to the steadfastness of the nation. Much like Eminem’s Chrysler commercial from last year, it’s about Detroit and defeat and resilience and the comeback.
“It’s halftime in America,” he starts. “People are out of work and they’re hurting.” True, all true. But after telling us how we’re all scared, like the people of Detroit, Eastwood gets pissed, while also obliquely referencing two of his more recent movies (Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino). “This country can’t be knocked out with one punch,” he growls. “We get right back up again. And when we do, the world’s going to hear the roar of our engines. Yeah, it’s halftime, America, and our second half is about to begin.”
Seriously, if America is not ready to run back onto the field after this pep talk, we’re not sure what it’s gonna take. Clint Eastwood for President!
