How did “fabric paintings” come to be your signature medium?
I used to sew in home [economics]. And I fell in love with sewing. I’ve always drawn pictures, and I could never find a connection between them until I took this little workshop and learned how to do appliqué, an old quilting technique, stitching fabric to a fabric background. It was this symbiotic moment where everything came together. I have always been driven to make things.
What do you (and viewers) get out of the medium that you don’t with more traditional ones, like painting?
It’s the tactile thing. Every day we all wear fabric. It’s such a huge part of our lives. We’ve all been wrapped in it … And everybody knows what quilts are, so they can relate that way.
