Teaming up with Christopher Nolan again, Bale plays a magician, Alfred Borden, who is embroiled in a bitter rivalry with Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman) at the turn of the century. Nolan asked that the actors not read Christopher Priest’s novel on which the film is based, but Bale read it anyway.
