Show: NYPD Blue
Detective Andy Sipowicz had his demons—so many that you would probably not want to meet him if he existed in real life, whether or not you had committed a crime. He was not only mean and crude but also depressed, tragic and ill. But flawed characters make good TV and, given that he only existed on the screen, he was great to follow for more than 250 episodes-worth of crime-solving excitement and anger from 1993 to 2005. He also kept up the classic detective mustache, while adding a new element to the sleuth-fashion repertoire: a look known as “The Sipowicz,” which is, according to Urban Dictionary, the combination of short sleeves and a tie.
Case File: In “Raging Bulls,” a season-six episode, the investigation of a racially motivated shooting shows what Sipowicz is (or is not) made of.
