Perhaps not the most overplayed of holiday songs, but easily one of the most annoyingly earnest. Recorded in 1984 by British supergroup Band Aid, the track features a star-studded ’80s cast: Bono, Sting, Boy George, Phil Collins, George Michael and more. Recorded as part of a campaign against the Ethiopian famine, it contains jaw-droppingly obvious lines like “And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmastime” and overbearing pretentious lines like “Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you!” Of course, most famously, the song seems to overlook the fact that more than half of the Ethiopians are Orthodox Christians who celebrate a very robust Christmas tradition in early January. So, yes, apparently, they do know its Christmas.
