The tune, sung by a man named Dr. Elmo who, when he penned the song, was a part-time veterinarian, started out as a joke. Unfortunately, it didn’t stay that way and eventually got picked up by a San Francisco radio DJ. That was more than 30 years ago, and you can still hear it today being played at malls, grocery stores and radios around the country. Based loosely on a true story of a grandmother who drank too much during the holidays, the song went platinum, and even had its own music video and cartoon.
