Released in 1977, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope currently rests in the No. 4 spot as one of the highest-grossing films of all time. The brainchild of filmmaker George Lucas, the Star Wars canon now includes a three-part prequel trilogy, made-for-TV movies, countless books and video games — not including the original trilogy that started it all. Over the course of its geek tenure, the franchise has banked more than $20 billion, and Lucas doesn’t show any signs of putting on the brakes anytime soon. In the next few years, Lucas himself will write and produce a live-action TV series said to be set between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, while an animated sitcom à la Family Guy or Robot Chicken is also in development. Continued violation of a beloved universe or genius marketing scheme?
