The Jigsaw Killer came to life just before Halloween 2004 in Saw, the first movie in a series that will see its seventh installment open in October. The premise of the film involves the Jigsaw Killer creating torture-inducing contraptions (traps, really) that his victims must try to figure out how to get out of. Most of them inevitably fail. The mastermind is disguised for much of the film, communicating mostly through audio messages. But an elaborate, manipulative plot finally reveals that he is a bitter, heartbroken man that has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Jigsaw is so bitter that he continues to torture random people for six more films — even beyond the grave, through several apprentices. The most painful part is that the series doesn’t appear to be ending any time soon.
