It’s hard to shine in a movie so dominated by a stunt performance like Dustin Hoffman’s portrayal of a savant. And yes, critic Pauline Kael was right when she called it a piece of “wet kitsch.” Yet there’s something so unapologetically jerky about Tom Cruise’s performance (despite the third-act turnaround) that it actually serves as the most truly felt piece of the film. Yeah, definitely, definitely the most truly felt piece of the film.
