One way to turn a TV series that was essentially about team dynamics into a film about the bad-assery of one person is to cast Tom Cruise as the lead. Supported by a game collection of supporting players (Jean Reno, Ving Rhames), Cruise nonetheless steals the show with the film’s most memorable moment — an almost silent break-in scene in which he dangles above a pressure-sensitive CIA vault floor. The film and its two sequels remain Cruise’s only foray into the blockbuster franchise scene.
