'Sleigh Ride'

As of Dec. 1, the instrumental tune “Sleigh Ride” was the most played song of the holiday season, according to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Since Oct. 1, Leroy Anderson’s symphonic piece, first played by the Boston Pops in 1948, had been played more than 64,317 times across America. The question of what deranged radio stations started playing holiday music one month before Halloween, however, remains unanswered.
'Winter Wonderland'

Is there anyone who hasn’t covered “Winter Wonderland”? Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Elvis, Dolly Parton, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan — everyone has recorded the classic, because classic it is. There’s no better soundtrack for when you’re admiring a pristine, snow-covered landscape, or close by a fireplace with some hot chocolate and someone to snuggle with. “Winter Wonderland” is not so cheery, however, in a department store, when you’re surrounded by artificial snow, hundreds of other determined shoppers and commercial items you’re all racing around to buy. It may be winter, but surely it’s not any wonderland the songwriters had in mind.
