2013 VMA, Artists.MTV, Music, Katy Perry
Girls star Allison Williams introduced the evening’s final performer, Katy Perry, who sang her hit “Roar” live for the first time. Instead of performing inside the Barclay’s Center, Perry set up a boxing ring underneath the Brooklyn Bridge to play the fight song, which comes complete with “eye of the tiger” shout-outs and Muhammad Ali float-like-a-butterfly-sting-like-a-bee references. The only way the set could have been improved would have been if Survivor came out to play “Eye of the Tiger” or if Perry boxed Sara Bareilles, who some have noted has an earlier song (“Brave”) that bears a striking similarity to “Roar.”
