Cate plays crime journalist Veronica Guerin in this story, based on the heroic (and tragically shortened) reporting of the fearless Sunday Independent writer. Guerin was a heroine to many in Ireland, and her probing front-page stories were credited with helping to bring an end to Dublin’s massive inner-city drugs problem. Sadly, Guerin got herself in too deep, and her exposure of underground crime bosses led to her being gunned down on a freeway outside the capital in 1996.
It’s not surprising then that Cate takes this role, and her accent, seriously. She sounds just about right as a no-frills, no-fuss northside Dubliner. She manages to convey both down-to-earth motherly warmth and the directness of an ambitious reporter. She does stray every now and again, with some accent hopping, but not enough to distract from the narrative.
