The movie is set in the smart Georgian suburbs of Dublin’s south side and the trendy cafes of its cultural quarter—Hudson plays Lucy Owen, a bubbly upper-middle-class city girl looking for love. Her performance hits the socioeconomic nail right on the head: she is definitely recognizable as a somewhat carefree, financially unburdened type one meets in certain parts of Ireland’s capital (one must assume Lucy works as a waitress to pass the time). The issue here is that Kate is surrounded by real Irish actors with real Irish accents. And yet her character feels right—in fact, we’re inclined to give her a pass on the all-too-predictable clownish exaggerations, because she’s just so damn nice.
