THE DINER: Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik)
THE SETTING: After being imprisoned in a bare room for 15 years, unlucky Korean businessman Dae-su is suddenly released—without learning the name of his never-seen captor or the reasons for his being held captive. He’s given a cell phone and a stack of currency, and—for his first meal as a free man—enters a sushi bar.
THE MEAL: An entire live octopus
NAUSEA LEVEL (ON A SCALE OF 1 to 10): [ 8 ] The still-writing tentacles that flail around his face kept us from ordering calamari for a time. (Filming the scene—seven takes, seven octopi—was difficult for the Buddhist Choi: he offered an apologetic prayer before biting into each unfortunate creature.)
