THE DINER: Ted Pikul (Jude Law), a reluctant participant in what may or may not be an elaborate virtual-reality game
THE SETTING: Accompanied by game designer Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh), he is told to go at a certain Chinese restaurant and order their daily special.
THE MEAL: A horrifying sampler of mutant amphibians—slick, rubbery and amorphous—served on a bed of rice.
NAUSEA LEVEL (ON A SCALE OF 1 to 10): [ 7] Before he made taut thrillers like Eastern Promises and A History of Violence, director David Cronenberg used to traffic in the visceral and disturbing. This movie is from his transitional period, but the old master’s hand is still evident: it takes a special kind of genius to have Ted use the remaining bones to construct a gun.
