YEAR: 1991
Between 1988 and 2002, Lynch shot a fair number of commercials for products ranging from Calvin Klein’s Obsession to the Clearblue Easy home pregnancy test. In 1991 — while busily creating his Twin Peaks universe — he did this creepily effective anti-littering PSA.
ON A SCALE OF 1 (LOW) TO 10 (HIGH), HOW WELL DOES THIS SPOT REFLECT THE DIRECTOR’S STYLE OR SENSIBILITY? (9) It’s loaded with Lynchian hallmarks: expressive photography (shot by Eraserhead DP Frederick Elmes), a fetishistic celebration of the ugliness lurking beneath the placid, and a fascination with body parts (those rat tails!). In the (admittedly shallow) annals of PSAs, has there ever been a better match of concept and director?
