It’s understandable that, as a young actress eager to shake off her Saved by the Bell goody two shoes typecasting, Elizabeth Berkeley might see the appeal in an All About Eve reboot set in the glitzy world of Las Vegas showgirls. Especially in the hands of Paul Verhoeven and Joe Eszterhas, who were coming off their success with Basic Instinct. Unfortunately for Berkeley, Showgirls was a far cry from the sexy smartness of Basic Instinct. Instead the film got slapped with the then-new NC-17 rating for reveling in the baudy and gratuitous. Eszterhas’ script has is laughable, opting for cheap thrills, clunky lines, and rampant, unnecessary nudity. The film won a then-record seven 1995 Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay and Worst Actress. Much like the best Hollywood stories, though, the film has gone from studio disaster to some form of success, raking in more than $100 million in the rental market. The film is now practically synonymous with the phrase “so-bad-it’s-good.”
