Madonna never has much luck choosing scripts. After the singer-turned-actress’ performances were panned in Shanghai Surprise, Who’s That Girl and Bloodhounds of Broadway, maybe Body of Evidence looked like a sure thing. After all, the film noir-inspired whodunit asked Madonna to tap into her then-overt sexuality to portray an accused black widow who seduces her lawyer (Willem Dafoe). Unfortunately for the Material Girl, the overwrought script and forced chemistry between Madonna’s damsel in distress and Dafoe’s attorney with a hero complex and loose morals, resulted in more eye-rolls than eyebrow raises. In the film, Madonna huskily breathes, “I’m hard to resist.” The same cannot be said of this movie. It is lucky for co-stars Dafoe and Julianne Moore that Madonna is the person most closely associated with the film.
