The 1980s were embarrassing for Bob Dylan. He released some of his worst albums and spent a lot of time walking around with his shirt unbuttoned. “Tight Connection to My Heart,” the opening track on 1985’s Empire Burlesque is a soulless pop song with Muzakesque backing vocals and a music video that attempts to make a shoulder-pad-wearing Dylan into a sex symbol. In a 1985 review, TIME called the song “a playful bit of lovelorn apocrypha” and Empire Burlesque “a record of survival and a tentative kind of triumph.” What can we say? The ’80s were bad for everyone.
