As played by Dudley Moore, the title character of this 1981 film is a spoiled, booze-soaked playboy who has never had a job in his life and would be insufferable were he a real person. Luckily, he’s not, and so his antics — like the time he drunkenly picks up a prostitute on the street only later to exclaim, “Are you a hooker? My God. I thought I was just doing great with you!” — make for a great screwball comedy. Of course, no lighthearted film is complete without an unlikely romance, and so when Arthur falls in love with a shoplifting waitress (Liza Minnelli), his family threatens to disinherit him. Can Arthur sober up long enough to pull his life together and marry his true love? Of course he can. But truthfully, we’d prefer it if he stayed drunk.
