X2: X-Men United was one of the best superhero movies ever. So naturally, a follow-up would have to scale pretty great heights to match its predecessor. Director Brett Ratner failed. At the end of the second film, it was clear that the next entry would concern itself with (geek alert!) the Dark Phoenix Saga, one of the X-Men’s most legendary story arcs. Yet the film seems to get most of its kicks by introducing as many mutants as possible, culminating in an explosive-filled, overwhelmingly convoluted showdown on Alcatraz Island.
