As one critic put it, the title seems almost a threat, a dangled punishment: “Hey, kids, we’ve got a lot more of these Origins movies hanging out. Don’t be bad to your parents, or we’ll make more of them!” In the end, sometimes mystery is better. O.K., so now we know why Wolverine is the way he is. Great. Does that make him any less unstoppable (and therefore kind of boring)? Nope. Given that mutants are shown by the X-Men films to be eminently complex people constantly questioning their place in the world, it’s a shame to see the series’ most famous character as nothing more than a meathead with claws.
