Penny Lane is not a groupie. “We’re band-aids,” she maintains — the muses, lovers and den mothers of a working rock band on the road. But Lane is eventually thrown over by Stillwater guitarist Russell Hammond when, in New York at the end of the tour, he falls back into the arms of his wife. At a poker game, Hammond trades Lane to the group Humble Pie for $50 and a case of beer. When the teenage William Miller tells Lane about the deal, she’s devastated, which makes her attempt at brave levity even more heartbreaking: “What kind of beer?” (For the record, it was Heineken.)
