David Aames (Tom Cruise) wakes up in his New York City home to find that Manhattan is empty. No pedestrians on the streets, no joggers in the park, no cars on the street besides his own vintage Ferrari. His increasingly paranoid journey eventually finds him surrounded by the neon glow of an empty Times Square. It’s one of the great how’d-they-do-that moments in cinema, and in this case there are no hidden wires or CGI: the entire scene was filmed on location. Cruise, who also produced the film, called in a few favors and was able to secure permission to close down Times Square on a quiet Sunday morning.
