Singles, Crowe’s 1992 ode to 20-somethingdom set in grunge-era Seattle, revolves around a local rental building and the intersecting lives of its young occupants. Steve Dunne (Campbell Scott) is essentially Lloyd Dobler all grown up: a city planner who dreams of greatness while never quite attaining it, whose girlfriend Linda Powell (Kyra Sedgewick) may or may not be pregnant. Drug-store clerk Doug Haugley (a career-making cameo by a youthful Jeremy Piven) recognizes Dunne from his college-radio-DJ days. “You’re the only man I know who could mix up Elvis Costello and Public Enemy!” he enthuses, trying to convince Dunne to come out of retirement for one more party. “You’re the king, man, you are the king! You’ve gotta be there, man, you must be there!” Then there’s a pause as he takes stock of Dunne’s purchases. “Of course, you may be busy.”
