Ah, September. A new crispness in the air, a new outfit, a new knapsack, a new school year. Even if not everyone begins the year on the Tuesday after Labor Day, it’s still a time to mark the return to academia and a time to dispense words of wisdom to the youth of the world.
But we won’t bore you with our advice: pop culture can teach you everything you need to know for a successful return to the classroom — and especially a high-school classroom. Want to make new friends? Grease can teach you how to transcend social cliques. Need a soundtrack to remind you of the value of an education? James Brown’s song Don’t Be a Dropout puts it in plain English. Looking for a new extracurricular activity? Buffy the Vampire Slayer can give you some ideas. (Okay, so maybe you’d be better off with Glee.)
Here are some helpful nuggets from sources from Goodbye, Mr. Chips and The Wonder Years to Mean Girls and the music of Sting—and read carefully. There just may be a pop quiz one day.
