10. Solange Knowles in Michael Kors
Beyoncé who? The Brooklyn-dwelling, singing/modeling/DJ’ing little sister of a certain Mrs. Carter always manages to look effortlessly hip no matter the occasion. Her ensemble for the UN World Food Programme dinner is a master class on how to put together a look that’s casual yet chic, buttoned up yet intriguing. A classic Michael Kors shirt and blazer give way to a burst of color, light and playfulness with cloud-patterned pants. An expert at mixing prints in unexpected ways, the 27-year-old Solange has carved out a distinct style niche.

9. Channing Tatum in Gucci
This former stripper-turned-actor had a lot to be thankful for in 2013: a new G.I. Joe movie, one of his first headlining turns in White House Down, the birth of his daughter and lingering female attention from the phenomenon that was Magic Mike. Though he looked quite alright in his array of skimpy male stripper costumes, Tatum cleans up just fine, as he shows here at the Oscars. His Gucci three-piece tuxedo is tailored perfectly, and the bow tie and lace-up shoes add classic finishing touches. This is how old Hollywood glam is done by the new Hollywood guard.

8. Selena Gomez in Atelier Versace
Though she was ultimately overshadowed by another former Disney star’s antics at this year’s VMAs, Selena Gomez pulled off a more elusive feat: she looked sexy and decidedly grown-up without seeming sleazy. This Versace gown was provocative in all the right ways—with a peel-away design that exposed a corset top—and landed Gomez on the sartorial map. She expertly navigated the fine line between revealing and showing too much. Along with her sleek hair and dark makeup, Gomez isn’t hanging out on Waverly Place any longer.

7. Mariah Carey’s sling bling
Vocal queen Mariah Carey dislocated her shoulder this summer while filming a music video for the remix of her single “#Beautiful.” Not content to let bodily injury impinge on her style, the pop songstress sported a series of elaborately designed slings along with her designer dresses to turn her injury into a sartorial statement. Whether studded, as at The Butler premiere, feathered or bedazzled, Mimi is determined to look fancy and fabulous.

6. Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs
After a summer spent shocking America with increasingly provocative getups—she told MTV that her ultimate look was a mix of “white trash and Chanel”—the former Hannah Montana did an about-face with this Marc Jacobs gown for Fashion Group International’s Night of Stars. The glittery green dress with a daringly low back is just the right mix of youthfulness and sparkle for the pop star. No furry animals, no crazy hemlines, no tongue wagging; here, Miley is dazzling and, dare we say, elegant.

5. Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen
Actress Kate Hudson often gives off a cheery California girl vibe, so it was a refreshing change to see her turn up to the Golden Globes in this Sarah Burton-designed Alexander McQueen gown. The gold collar and neckline detailing perfectly highlight Hudson’s golden locks, and the deep keyhole cutout strikes the perfect balance between skin baring and modesty. In a sea of strapless, jewel-toned dresses, Hudson took a fashion risk that paid off in spades.

4. Jane Fonda in Atelier Versace
Not many 75-year-olds can work it like Jane Fonda. The actress and exercise guru arrived at the Oscars in a canary yellow V-neck Versace gown. The vibrant color might have scared off other women, but it simply makes Fonda glow. The structured shoulders, the sequined waist detailing—all show that mature actresses need not resort to shapeless potato sacks when they’re on the red carpet. Fonda is proof positive that you can look beautiful, sexy and still age-appropriate at the same time.

3. Rihanna in Azzedine Alaïa
RiRi usually jumps from one trend to the next faster than she churns out hit singles, but at this year’s Grammys, she captured our attention by softening her look with this stunning red Alaïa gown. The crisscrossed bodice, sheer paneling and floaty train gave her a romantic air, a departure from her typically edgy persona. With this sleek style, loose waves and red lipstick, the Barbadian singer is simply breathtaking. Sometimes playing it safe can be the most daring choice of all.

2. Kate Middleton in Emilia Wickstead
As she navigated her first pregnancy on a global stage, the Duchess of Cambridge was well aware that millions of eyes were upon her. Early in the pregnancy, she disguised her growing stomach with wrap dresses and body-skimming overcoats—no muumuus or leggings for the woman who has redefined conservative chic. In this pale blue Emilia Wickstead dress, she displayed her baby bump for the first time during a visit to the National Portrait Gallery. She looked radiant, comfortable and still entirely appropriate for the occasion, showing off her shape without overexposing it. Kate has rarely, if ever, had a sartorial stumble since her royal engagement. Her maternity style was no exception.

1. Jennifer Lawrence in Dior
2013 was a breakout year for this young actress: the star of the Hunger Games franchise and Silver Linings Playbook landed a high-profile ad campaign as the face of the major fashion house Dior. Here, she stunned in one of their creations at the Oscars. The pale pink princess gown is fitted through the hips, giving her an ethereal mermaid look. Lawrence endeared herself to viewers by tripping as she went up the stairs to accept her Best Actress trophy. Fall or not, she still looked like a radiant star.
