When Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl picks up his guitar to play a set with his all-star group Sound City Players at Stubbs on Thursday, March 14, it will be only a few hours after he delivers the festival’s keynote address. It’s likely that Grohl, the ex-Nirvana drummer, won’t be the only one rushing from one venue to the rock club, because Sound City Players are well worth watching. The group that grew out of Grohl’s recent Sound City documentary, about the famed L.A. recording studio, features a revolving cast of talented musicians that includes Paul McCartney, Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor. For their SXSW show, the Sound City Players will include Stevie Nicks, John Forgerty, Rick Nielsen, Rick Springfield, and a number of other rock heroes.
