TYPE OF VIOLENT WEATHER: Winter storm
ITS SIGNIFICANCE IN THE MOVIE: Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), a writer looking for some solitude to work on his latest project, brings his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and young son Danny (Danny Lloyd) to the Overlook Hotel, a mountain resort where he will be the winter caretaker. Things go badly for the family—the hotel’s dark history begins to effect Jack and Danny (who has the supernatural power that gives the book its name)—and are made that much worse when snowstorms cut them off from help.
RANDOM (BUT SLIGHTLY RELEVANT) FACTOID: As many Stephen King fans know, the climax of the novel finds Danny and his father chased by the giant topiary animals that dot the hotel’s grounds. Director Stanley Kubrick intended to shoot this ending, but when he found the special effects lacking, he set Jack’s pursuit of his son inside a giant maze.
