When her old gang — a team of skilled assassins to which she once belonged — shows up at her country chapel wedding, the ex-Black Mamba (currently carrying the name Beatrix Kiddo) knows that they’re not bringing presents: they massacre the party and shoot her in the head, leaving her to die. She survives the attack and, after waking from a four-year-long coma, initiates her plan of killing each and every one of her former colleagues. Quentin Tarantino’s giddy pastiche of cult genres and wondrously appropriate music cues creates an internal logic and order to the otherwise nonsensical goings-on: there’s a satisfying sense of completion when The Bride finally defeats Viper Squad leader (and former lover) Bill after striking him using the legendary Five Point Palm Exploding Heart technique.
INTERESTING FACT: According to makeup effects artist Christopher Allan Nelson, more than 450 gallons of fake blood were sprayed, spilled, or otherwise discharged over the filming of both movies.
