Garbo’s stern Soviet commissar understandably succumbs to the charms of Paris, less understandably to the more mysterious charms of louche Melvyn Douglas. “Garbo Laughs!” the ads proclaimed, and we were delighted to join in the fun. “Literate and knowingly directed,” TIME said, somewhat understating the case for this lovely romantic comedy.
