Registry: USS Enterprise / NCC 1701 A
First Seen On: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (movie: 1986)
Meet the new ship, same as the old ship. Some fans were disappointed when the newest Enterprise, which replaced the refitted 1701, turned out to be the same ship with an ‘A’ tacked on at the end of the license plate. Indeed, the movie crew used the same shooting model.
In 1992’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, though, the interior was far more modern looking than that seen in the first ‘Trek’ movie — think touchscreen technology, instead of dials and knobs. And while it may have been divisive, this Enterprise was indisputably significant: The adding of the ‘A’ would begin a naming convention that would exist right up until 2002′s Star Trek Nemesis. We would soon see an Enterprise-B, -C, -D and -E.
