Save the cheerleader, save the TV show. NBC will resurrect Heroes in 2015 as a 13-episode event miniseries titled Heroes Reborn, with creator Tim Kring returning to the show’s helm.
NBC teased the show’s return Saturday in a spot aired between Olympic events. The network will release a digital tie-in before the show’s launch, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The original ensemble show ran from 2006 to 2010 and jump-started the careers of Zachary Quinto and Hayden Panettiere.
The recent success of miniseries like True Detective and Top of the Lake has opened up huge possibilities for creators like Kring. Not only does the limited run of a miniseries attract big-name actors who otherwise wouldn’t grace the small screen (like Matthew McConaughey in True Detective and Quinto for Heroes Reborn), but the short format also offers new possibilities for old fan favorites like Heroes. This spring, another popular show from the 2000s, 24, will come back to TV as a “limited-event television series” under the title 24: Live Another Day, with Kiefer Sutherland reprising his role as Jack Bauer.
Let’s hope this trend continues. If networks are taking suggestions, we’d love to see resurrected-miniseries versions of Twin Peaks, The West Wing and Party Down.
