Seth MacFarlane has gone from scripts to screens, and now he’s tackled the novel. Best known as the creator of Family Guy and American Dad, MacFarlane has turned his million-jokes-a-minute style of humor to a novelization of his upcoming film, A Million Ways to Die in the West.

The film, which hits theaters on May 30, was co-written and directed by MacFarlane, who also happens to star. The Guardian describes MacFarlane’s role in the film as “a sheep herder in the wild west intent on avoiding the multifarious sticky ends that characterise frontier life – but has to man up when his girlfriend leaves him for another man, and when a beautiful gunslinger and her outlaw husband arrive in town.” The movie also stars Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Neil Patrick Harris, and Sarah Silverman.

For those who can’t wait for the movie version, the novel of the same name debuts on March 4.
