The CW announced Wednesday that it will revive the Veronica Mars property as a web series in anticipation of the Kickstarter-funded movie debuting March 14 about the former high-school detective who returns to her California hometown when her former boyfriend is charged with murder.

Though the CW released few details on the CW Seed project, creator Rob Thomas will definitely be involved, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Though key cast members, including Kristen Bell, will return for the film, Thomas does not yet know whether they will be involved in the web series. Bell is already committed to filming Showtime’s House of Lies.

Veronica Mars will be returning to the channel for the first time since it was canceled in 2007. CW Seed is designed as an incubator for shows that could transition to TV. So there’s a chance that Veronica Mars could head back to primetime, especially given fan support — the film raised $5.7 million in fan donations.
