McConaughey has lent his ambling, drawling, sun-kissed charm to several romantic comedies, but he’s perhaps at his most likable here. He’d have to be, to play a guy who’s already engaged (to Bridgette Wilson-Sampras) but falls in love with the woman organizing his wedding (Jennifer Lopez).
He makes you see how both of these women could find him lovable and sweet enough to marry, and that he’s not deceiving or leading on either one of them. But he’s also too much of a gentleman to dump his fiancee outright and act on his feelings for J-Lo. He’s chivalrous, rescuing her (and her high-heeled pump) from a street collision, and rescuing her later from embarrassment during a night of drunken weepiness. Plus, he enjoys watching old movies al fresco. What’s not to love?
