Houston’s success in the music industry eventually lead to offers to appear in films. In 1992, she starred, alongside Kevin Costner, in The Bodyguard, playing a star who hires private security to protect her from a stalker. It was one of the first interracial romance movies that did not make race a focal point of the film. While some critics panned Houston’s performance, the film was box office success, earning more than $410 million worldwide. One of Houston’s contribution to the film’s soundtrack, a cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” quickly become one of her most memorable hits, winning Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal. The epitaph on Houston’s headstone includes the words I Will Always Love You.
