Davis’ presentation from the year she was nominated for Thelma and Louise is a perennial on worst-ever Oscar-fashion lists, but again, it points up why “fashion disaster” is often a misnomer. “Disaster” implies that someone tried and failed to achieve a goal. Davis’ goal here is “I want to marry the Moulin Rouge to the Black and White Ball, and I want Christo and Jean-Claude to design the bridal gown and the wedding cake.” She does not take that goal seriously—this is clearly a woman who sees the Oscars as a hilarious costume party—and yet she achieves it.
