Also in 1971, an even more unlikely South cover hit the Top 10: the Osmonds, fresh off the bubblegummy Jackson 5 imitations “One Bad Apple” and “Double Lovin’,” recorded his song “Yo-Yo,” punching it up with braying horns and the flyest outfits and dance moves Utah had ever seen. Its success would lead the Osmonds further in a rock direction. For which we can all be grateful.
