This masterful drama about the downfall of a President features a slew of great American actors — Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Robards, Jack Warden — at the height of their powers. But the real star here is director Alan J. Pakula, who manages to invest what might have been a mere media-wonk hagiography of Bob Woodward (Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Hoffman) into one the decade’s most thoughtful thrillers. With movies like All the President’s Men and The Parallax View (1974), Pakula captured the political unease of the age as effectively and convincingly as any of his peers.
